Add or edit a job title for a contractor (optional)

Contractors typically act as external consultants or project owners. Make sure the job title reflects the contractor’s scope of work. Learn more on our blog.

  1. Go to the People section. 
  2. Find, and click the name of the contractor.
  3. Next to "Job title" click Edit. 
  4. Select a job title from the dropdown, or click Create job title to add a new one.
  5. Click Save.
Assign a contractor to a department
  1. Go to the People section. 
  2. Find, and click the name of the contractor.
  3. Next to "Department" click Edit. 
  4. Choose a department from the dropdown, or click Create department to start a new one. 
  5. Click Save. 
Update the work email for a contractor

Some company related info from Gusto will go to the work email. This can help keep your company info more secure and private. We’ll also use this email to set up software accounts for this employee. If you do not have a work email setup, the employee’s personal email will be used.

  1. Go to the People section. 
  2. Find, and click the name of the contractor.
  3. Next to "Work email" click Edit. 
    • If you have not added one already, click Add work email to get started. 
  4. Click Save. 
Assign a manager for a contractor

Managers can approve hours and time off. Based on your settings, they may also be able to access or edit information about their reports. Learn more.

  1. Go to the People section. 
  2. Find, and click the name of the contractor.
  3. Next to "Manager" click Edit. 
  4. Find a manager from the list, and click Save.
Edit the start date for a contractor
  1. Go to the People section. 
  2. Find, and click the name of the contractor.
  3. Scroll to the "Work" header and click Edit. 
  4. Change the start date, then click Save. 
View work history for a contractor

This will show the start and end dates for a person's work history. 

  1. Go to the People section. 
  2. Find, and click the name of the contractor.
  3. Scroll to the "Work" header and click View work history.
  4. Click the X in the top-right corner to close the page.
Change the work address (state) for a contractor
  1. Go to the People section. 
  2. Find, and click the name of the contractor.
  3. Scroll to the "Work address" header and click Edit.
  4. Select a state from the dropdown, and click Save. 
Dismiss or rehire a contractor

Change the contractor type (SSN or EIN), or worker type

If you're changing a contractor's identification number from an SSN to EIN, or vice versa, follow the steps in the linked article (based on your situation).
