                  Employees and contractors can switch from check to direct deposit for free.
  Admins can also make this change by following the steps below. For info on payment speeds, check out this article.
 Set up direct deposit for your employee  To help prevent fraud, we recommend that your employee updates their own bank info in Gusto. They might need to confirm their old account before adding a new one.
 Employees can:
  - Switch to direct deposit
- Add up to 5 bank accounts
- Split payments between accounts
Steps for admins to set up direct deposit for an employee:
  - Go to the People section.
- Click the employee’s name.
- Go to the Pay section.
- In "Payment Methods", click Add Method.
- Enter:  - Routing number
- Account number
- Account type
- Display name
 
- Click Save.
📌 Gusto will send a test deposit to verify the bank account. If there’s an error, the account information may need to be updated. This can take a few days.
 Once verified, the employee will be paid by direct deposit on each payroll submitted after it is verified.
     Set up direct deposit for a contractor  Contractors can switch from check to direct deposit. To help prevent fraud, we recommend that your contractor updates their own bank info in Gusto. They might need to confirm their old account before adding a new one.
 Steps for admins to set up direct deposit for a contractor:
  - Go to the People section.
- Click the contractor’s name.
- Under "Information", click Pay.
- Next to "Payment", click Edit.
- Choose Direct deposit and enter:  - Account type
- Routing number
- Account number
 
- Confirm the account number.  - ⚠️ Prepaid debit cards cannot be used.
 
- Click Save.
The contractor will be paid by direct deposit on payments submitted after the bank account has been verified.
