Content

Admins with the required permissions can dismiss and rehire contractors in Gusto.

You're only charged the monthly per-contractor price ($6, or $12 based on plan type) in the months you pay the contractor. When you're done paying a contractor (US or international), you can dismiss them.

Reminders

  • Dismissed contractors' profiles are still available in Gusto—admins can still view them in the Dismissed section, and contractors can still sign in to Gusto and view their payments and documents.
  • To pay a contractor you once dismissed, rehire them first, then submit the payment.
  • To comply with payment record regulations, once a contractor has been paid, their profile can be dismissed, but not deleted.

Use the dropdowns below to learn more. Use CMD + F (or CTRL + F) to search for words in the article.

Dismiss a contractor—make them inactive for now

What to expect when you dismiss a contractor

  • You will not be able to pay them.
    • They'll be considered inactive.
  • Contractors will not be emailed about being dismissed
  • Contractors can still sign in to Gusto to view their payments and access documents.

Dismiss a contractor

  1. Go to the People section.
  2. Search for the contractor's name.
    • You can see a list of all contractors by clicking the filter icon, selecting contractors only, and then clicking Apply.
  3. Click your contractor's name.
  4. From the “Work” section, scroll to the “Work” card, and click x Dismiss.
  5. Enter an end date.
  6. Click Save.
View your dismissed contractors
  1. Go to the People section.
  2. Click the Dismissed tab.
  3. Search dismissed team members to find the person.
  4. Click their name to view their profile.

If you need to pay your contractor in the future, rehire them first, then submit the payment.

Rehire a dismissed contractor
If a contractor has changed their contractor type, from individual to business, or vice versa, instead of "rehiring" the old profile, add the contractor again with the new business type. To rehire a contractor with the same classification, follow the steps below.

How to rehire and pay a dismissed contractor (with the same contractor type)

  1. Go to the People section.
  2. Click the Dismissed tab.
  3. Search dismissed team members to find the person.
  4. Click their name to view their profile.
  5. Scroll to find the + Rehire link.
  6. Enter a start date.
  7. Click Save.

The contractor will appear active (instead of dismissed) in the People section of Gusto on the start date.

Once they're active, to pay them, go to the Pay section and select Pay Contractors.

Reminders

  • You can only dismiss a contractor a second time after you've processed a payment (or reported a historical payment).
  • You're only charged a monthly per-contractor price in the months contractors are paid (or a historical payment is reported). This means you're not being charged for them just because they're active, only when you pay them.
