Content

You can see your current and old paystubs in your Gusto employee profile at anytime.

  • If you're an admin: Learn how to view past payments here.
  • If you're a US contractor: Learn how to view payments made to you here.
  • If you're a non-US contractor: Learn how to view your payment history here.
  • If you're using the mobile app: Get mobile instructions here.

Important things to know

  • When you get paid: Your pay date depends on when your employer runs payroll and the company's direct deposit speed. If you do not see a paystub or have payment questions, ask your employer.
  • Direct deposit timing: Money can show up in your bank account anytime during the business day (until 5pm local time). This depends on how fast your bank processes the funds.
  • Payment method: Even if you have direct deposit set up, your employer can choose to pay you by check instead.
  • Bank account numbers: The last four digits of any bank account paid appear at the top of the paystub.

If you want to change how you get paid or add multiples accounts: Check this article.

View or print your employee paystubs

Your paystubs show up in Gusto on your pay date (after your employer runs payroll). If you do not see your paystub, contact your employer (previous paystubs may have been with a different payroll system, etc).

How to view or print your paystubs in Gusto

  1. Sign in to your Gusto employee profile.
  2. Click the Pay section.
    • If you're an admin and do not see this, switch to your employee account.
  3. Click the paystub you wish to see.
  4. To print it: Click Download PDF in the top-right corner and print from your browser.

What's on your paystub

  • Gross pay: Total money before taxes
  • Employee and employer taxes
  • Benefits and deductions: Health insurance, retirement, etc.
  • Employer contributions: What your company pays for you
  • Time off: Vacation and sick days used and earned
  • Reimbursements: Money paid back to you
  • Your final check amount

How taxes affect your pay

Your net pay = gross pay minus taxes, benefits, and deductions

Pre-tax benefits (like health insurance):

  • Lower your taxable wages
  • Give you more take-home pay
  • Not subject to Federal Income Tax or FICA taxes
  • Exception: 401(k) contributions still get FICA taxes but not Federal Income Tax

Tax amounts change if your gross pay changes from paycheck to paycheck.

Types of wages explained

  • Gross Wages
    • Total pay before taxes and deductions
    • Includes hourly/salary pay, tips, bonuses, vacation pay, sick pay, holiday pay
  • Taxable Wages
    • Part of gross wages that gets taxed for income tax
    • Gross wages minus pre-tax deductions
    • Different taxes may have different taxable wage amounts
  • Subject Wages
    • Similar to taxable wages
    • Must be reported on tax returns
    • Based on federal and state rules
    • No taxes taken out of these wages
  • Excess Wages
    • Wages that should be taxed but are over the limit
  • Exempt Wages
    • Wages that don't get taxed
    • Could be over the wage limit for certain taxes
    • Could be reimbursements that aren't taxable
Upcoming paychecks payment tracker

The Upcoming Paychecks feature is a real-time payroll status tool available to you in your Gusto account and the Gusto mobile app.

This tool displays all upcoming payments, and each payment will remain here until the payday passes. After this, you can view all prior payments from the Pay section of your account.

If there are issues with your payment after payday, we'll email you.

Upcoming paycheck statuses
  • Tracking: This is an estimated payday based on your company's pay schedule.
  • Status unknown: There's no confirmation of the planned payday.
  • Pay processing: The payroll is expected to pay out on the shown date, and the payroll has been processed—the funds are currently in transit.
  • Payday today: Today is the check date of the payment—funds should be deposited by 5 pm local time.
    • It can take up to 10pm for your bank to make the funds available.
  • Updated date: Changes have been made to the payroll, which may impact the payday.
Bank details for the payment

We'll use your preferred payment method, which you can edit up until processing begins for each paycheck.

Keep in mind, even if you have direct deposit set up, it's at your employer's discretion on how they pay you—via direct deposit or by check payment. This section will update to the final method and destination determined during payroll.

  • Check payment: This payment has been finalized as a check payment. If you have questions about this, contact your employer.
  • Direct deposit payment: Your paycheck is set to appear in your selected bank account(s) by the end of payday. The direct deposit timing is based on your bank's processing times—payments may hit your bank account at any time during the business day.
Track this paycheck

This section will show additional information about the status of the payment (if you need to update your bank information, if you need to reach out to your employer, etc.).

It'll also show whether the payment method for the payroll is set to check or direct deposit. If the payment method is direct deposit, it'll show the bank account(s) the funds will be deposited to.

  • Upcoming paychecks: This page displays the next estimated pay date according to your company's pay schedule, along with any other confirmed payments.
  • Pay history: Click this to view your previous paystubs from payrolls that have already been paid out.
FAQs

Q: What does status "unknown" mean?

A: This means that we do not have confirmation of the planned payday, and we're unable to provide any more information. We recommend reaching out to your employer for more insight.

Q: Why does my upcoming paycheck say an updated date? Am I not getting paid on time?

A: This means that your employer has processed payroll, but the check date has changed. We're unable to provide more detail, so you'll need to contact your employer for more information.

Q: It says that my payday is today, but my funds have not been deposited yet. What’s going on?

A: The direct deposit timing is based on your bank's processing times—payments may hit your bank account at any time during the business day, until 10pm local time.

Q: It's showing my payment as a check payment. How do I get paid?

A: This means your employer will need to write or print you a check payment—contact them for more information.

Paycheck Estimate

Note: This feature is only available to some users.

Paycheck Estimate is a feature provided to employees who are paid through Gusto that allows them to view an estimate of their upcoming pay. It may become available up to 4 business days before the check date and will disappear on the check date of the payroll when the official paystub is available.

This feature is exclusive to the Gusto mobile app. Employees will not be able to access this feature through www.gusto.com.

Access your paycheck estimate

  1. Sign in to the Gusto mobile app.
  2. Click the Upcoming Paychecks Payment Tracker. This will show the status of an upcoming payroll.
  3. Select Show paycheck estimate.
    • If this is not an option, it could be that:
      • The payroll is reversed or canceled.
      • Today is the check date of the payroll—refer to the official paystub.
      • The payroll settings have been updated.

Discrepancies in the estimate

The amount displayed is an estimate of pay. The estimate may not be accurate and is subject to change based on various factors. If you think the estimate is wrong, wait for the official paystub on the check date.

If the official paystub seems incorrect, contact your employer for more info.

Review your compensation in Gusto (how much you're paid)

You can view how you're being paid (salary, hourly, etc.), your job title, and your wages at any time in your account by following the steps below.

  1. Sign in to Gusto.
  2. Click My profile.
  3. Go to the Pay section.
  4. Review the details in the “Compensation” box.
When you'll be paid—troubleshoot payment issues

Your pay date depends on when your employer sends your payroll through Gusto. Once your employer runs payroll, use this guide to fix any payment problems.

Non-US (international) contractors: If you have payment issues, ask your employer to message us through their Gusto account.

How direct deposit works

  • Your employer submits payroll to Gusto
  • Gusto sends direct deposit payments electronically to your bank
  • You get an email from Gusto on payday
  • Your paystub shows up in your account (learn where you can find them in Gusto in this article)
  • Banks have until 5 PM local time to put money in your account

Important: Each company has different payment speeds. Ask your employer about your specific pay date. Gusto cannot answer questions about payments until your actual payday.

How check payments work

Your employer is responsible for giving you or sending you your paper check. Check your paystub in Gusto to see if you're getting paid by direct deposit or check.

My payment is missing—what do I do?

If you do not see money in your account on payday (allow until 5pm local time), or you believe there's a delay, follow these steps:

Step 1: Check your account

Make sure you're signed in to the right Gusto profile. If you have multiple accounts, try switching to a different one.

Step 2: Check your payment method

  1. See if you're set up for direct deposit in your profile.
    • Note: Even if you have direct deposit set up, your employer can still choose to pay you by check.
  2. Look at your paystub in Gusto to see if you're getting paid by direct deposit or check.
    • If it says "check," your employer should give you a paper check. The money will not appear in your bank if you're paid by check.

Step 3: Check your bank information

Make sure your bank details are correct:

Look for the test payment:

  • Gusto sends a $0.01 test payment when you add bank info
  • You should see this within 1-2 business days
  • If you do not see it, your bank info might be wrong

If your bank info is wrong (and we got an error trying to deposit funds):

  • Update your existing bank information—we'll automatically try to resend the payment to the new account.
  • If you fully remove your old bank account and add a new one:
    • For US employees: We'll automatically try to resend the payment to the new account.
    • For all other users: You need to message us from the Image section of your account to resend your payment.

If you recently changed banks:

  • Check your old bank account for the payment
  • If you cannot access your old account, message us from the Image section of your account to get your "ACH trace ID" (payment tracking number)
  • Then call your bank to help find the payment

Step 4: Check for pending payments

Sign in to your current bank account or call your bank. Ask if there are any pending payments (credits) coming to your account.

Still need help?

  1. Contact your employer first. Ask them these questions:
    • When is my expected pay date?
    • Am I being paid by direct deposit or check?
    • Can you confirm my bank account details are correct?
    • Can you check my payment details?
  2. If your employer cannot help, they can message us from the Image section of their admin account. Our team can give them detailed information about your payment or any errors.
